Allan McKinnon approached me in the summer of 2008 asking if I would be interested in redesigning the website for the Bible college in Tanzania.
I took Allan through the process of developing a brief for the site that would act as the catalyst for the main goals of the site. The college had never had a website before (Allan had created a blog using Blogger.com) but it didn’t really function how they thought it should or were able to change the way it looked effectively.
Having received the brief, I created some wireframes (using Photoshop in this case) for the homepage and what would be the content pages below. Allan was happy with the wireframes - in this instance there were no changes to be made - and I started on the Photoshop design comps.
Allan had provided me with some images that he wanted to use on the site and this part was probably the biggest challenge. None of images sat right and the colour was somewhat distorted in some. What I thought I’d do was grayscale the images and apply a blue/transparent gradient, floating the BBC logo to the right.
With the design comps good to go I started to map out an Expression Engine architecture for the site. In this case we had a few sections with custom fields. For example, the courses section and staff section all have independent field groups which differ from a standard section like news.
The end result is a pleasing website which is not over-complicated, is easily accessible and informationally rich.
